20+ Years of Improv 4 Kids & Teens

We daily work with student groups from around the world – NYC DOE VENDOR, Field Trips, School Assemblies, Student Travel Groups (Broadway Classrooms), Workshops, Residencies and professional development programming.

The cast of EIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH has been delivering educational outreach programming since 2003. In 2011, we opened up our Times Square NYC comedy school at the request of many of our fans. They loved how their kids came a live at our shows and wanted their children to work us more often.

Now we offer comedy camp all summer and weekly classes year round. Our unique program combines improv and stand up comedy.

The core focus is the improv. Improv is acting, comedy, creative writing, directing and more. We deconstruct language arts. We develop public speaking skills. We conquer stage fright and social anxiety. We learn to play like adults, retaining the power of our inner child.

The stand up comedy section further develop the individual skill set and brings the improv training back into creative writing.

Combining the improv and stand-up creates a complete performer more ready for modern TV and film than any acting class. Also, powerful training for future CEOs, marketing teams, sales ninjas, and more.

Every class features a series of games. Everything in Improv is a game, from the ice breakers to the performance.

We always warm-up. The most important moments, especially for new students are the warm up games. Please be on time for class. The most important part of every art class happens in the first 15 minutes. We need to focus, individually and as a team. We learn valuable skills playing these games. We warm up our mind, body and soul. We move past ego & insecurity into the creative collaboration zone.

These ice breakers and technique games are where we learn both performance technique (movement, projection, listening, character choices, etc) and story telling (WHO, WHERE, WHAT). This where we come together as a team. Without, you get a series of MEH – more bad jokes and less great storytelling.

Then we just play games you might see in a show. Our approach to comedy / acting “classes” is treating students like artists (because they are). Our teachers are more like directors in a rehearsal because ultimately we are preparing for a show. We drop wisdom along the way. But we learn best trough story and play. So we just play.

We are unique in the inclusion of stand-up comedy. At first we had small classes, so we included stand up comedy as a way to pass the time when only 2 students showed up. We discovered Stand Up comedy is better at teaching stage presence and other individual skills. Then our students started winning every competition in town. In 2018, Judah came in 2nd at the Comedy 360 featuring Kenan Thompson. In 2019, Carolyn was named Funniest Kid in America at age 12. Both were headlining the 2020 shows when covid hit. Saloni won the first year back in 2022.

While we have many braggables, with students on TV, Film, Stage and many working for our company, we still focus on having fun. We try to talk our students out of a career in the arts. Instead, we teach to create better future leaders and community members. We teach students to be better students. We use these same games to teach teachers, corporate teams, leaders, sales, customer service, conflict resolution and more.

Walt Frasier’s #1 Rule: HAVE FUN but NEVER at another’s expense!

In improv comedy we focus on great theater, never bad comedy. We lead with great characters and stories. Comedy, in all it’s forms, focuses on the short comings of human experience. Too much comedy is just mean. Even a great roast should come from a place of love. But we want EVERYONE to have a fun, safe space at our classes and shows.

Improvisation #1 Rule: YES! And…

Our instincts teach us to say NO. Imptovisation teaches us to always say YES to our scene partners. We accept oir scene partners for who they are, what they say, how they talk, etc. We suspend judgement. We replace the fear of the unknown with curiosity.

AND… we bring our best work, following up every YES with words and actions in support of everything that has come before.

THE #1 SKILL IN COMEDY? LISTENING

Active Listening doesn’t go far enough. We teach, listen with your eyes. Listen with the willingness to change.

DON’T THINK

Replace thinking with listening. Don’t stop to think. Don’t TRY to be clever. Don’t TRY to be funny. Don’t TRY to impress. These are all functions of ego & insecurity.

Instead, HAVE FUN, YES AND… & LISTEN… Then, just respond. Don’t waste time worrying about the words. Instead make simple choices about WHO you are, WHERE you are and WHAT you are doing.

SHOW DON’T TELL

Don’t bore us talking about stuff, or worse, what happened to your character yesterday. Instead SHOW US the fun story. Be present in the action.
