After 22 years of performing and teaching Improv Comedy, there is one constant that supersedes all others: Have Fun.
When we focus on trying to be funny, clever, or simply “great,” we kill scenes. We get in our own way. When we worry about what people think, fear embarrassment, ridicule, or judgment, we kill scenes. When we are intimidated by professional veteran comics, we kill scenes. When we try to impress our teachers, parents, etc., we kill scenes. Even when we think we need to carry or save a scene because we are the veteran professional trying to help a new player, we still kill scenes.
But when we focus on my #1 rule, we all have fun, and we create amazingly fun moments for ourselves and our audience. I’ve seen kids, weary of getting on stage, excel in improv after having five minutes of agency. I’ve also seen amazingly intelligent talented people never get past their own controlling ego. Everyone I have ever worked with has had a moment when they suddenly realized, “Oh, THIS is what life without fear is like!” because they let go of ego and insecurity.
That’s the magic of improv. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being present. It’s about trusting yourself and your scene partner. It’s about embracing the unknown and finding joy in the unexpected, never again in fear of the unknown.

Why Improv Matters
Improv, in a safe and fun environment, makes us better versions of ourselves. It helps us become:
- Better students: By sharpening our critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Better teachers: By fostering creativity and engagement in the classroom.
- Better friends: By improving our communication and listening skills.
- Better life partners: By building trust, empathy, and the ability to navigate conflict with humor.
- Better workmates/team builders: By strengthening collaboration and innovation.
- Better leaders: By empowering others and creating a positive and inclusive culture.
- Better salespeople: By developing the ability to connect with customers and adapt to their needs.
- Better customer service providers: By remaining calm under pressure and finding creative solutions.
